ItemStatus and potential of fisheries and aquaculture in Asia and the Pacifi(Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, 2006) Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Regional Office for Asia and the PacificThe fisheries and aquaculture sector remains of fundamental importance to the Asia-Pacific region. Production from both capture fisheries and aquaculture has grown since 2002 (3 percent for capture fisheries and 14 percent for aquaculture). In 2004, the region contributed 49 percent of the global production of captured fish (46.7 million tonnes) and 91 percent of global aquaculture (54.3 million tonnes). This huge production (and value) provides many opportunities for revenue generation, employment, and should contribute significantly to poverty reduction and increased food security of the region. However, there are many challenges that need to be met to make this a reality. Using regional fishery data and information collated by FAO, this report provides a comprehensive picture of production trends of fisheries and aquaculture and reviews the current status of fisheries resources and aquaculture species and their contribution to national economies and food security. This is illustrated by a detailed view of sub-regions and aquaculture production by species groups. The report also elaborates on two emerging issues that require closer attention in the future to ensure sustainable development of the sector – illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing and food safety and trade in fisheries and aquaculture.
